Not every idea starts as a product.

New HLNA ideas begin in the Lab. It is where smaller tools, prototypes and experiments live while we work out whether they solve a problem worth pursuing — and where it is fine for the answer to be no.

How a project moves

A project may move through Research → Prototype → In Development → Beta → Live. At any point it can also be paused or archived. Moving forward is earned, not assumed.

  1. 01ResearchUnderstanding the problem. Reading, measuring and sketching. There may be no code yet.
  2. 02PrototypeWorking code built to test an idea. Rough edges are expected and it is not meant for general use.
  3. 03In DevelopmentCommitted to and being built properly. Not yet available for others to use.
  4. 04BetaUsable by a limited group while it is tested against real-world conditions.
  5. 05LivePublicly available and maintained.

What decides whether an idea moves on

  • Is the problem real? Someone — often us — has to be experiencing it, not just imagining it.
  • Is there a better way? If existing tools already solve it well, the Lab should say so and move on.
  • Can it be done carefully? Especially where software acts on people's data, devices or decisions.
  • Is it worth maintaining? A project that goes live has to be looked after.
